Indian Junior Women's Hockey Team Crushes Canada 12-0 in World Cup Opener
The Indian junior women's hockey team began their FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup 2023 campaign with a resounding 12-0 victory over Canada in their opening match. Annu scored three goals in the 4th, 6th, and 39th minute, while Dipi Monika Toppo, Mumtaz Khan, Deepika Soreng, and Neelam each scored one goal. Mumtaz Khan scored four goals, while Deepika Soreng scored two.
India started the game with an attacking strategy, putting constant pressure on Canada and quickly taking an early lead with two goals from Annu (4', 6') through penalty corners. Even after taking a two-goal lead, India continued to play aggressively, maintaining pressure on Canada. However, they were unable to score any more goals in the first quarter, and it ended 2-0 in their favor.
The momentum from the first quarter carried into the second for India, which sustained their dominance. They maintained possession, consistently penetrating the circle, resulting in Dipi Monika Toppo (21') and Mumtaz Khan (26') netting a field goal each, further extending India's lead. In the meantime, Canada won a penalty corner but they were unable to make the most of it. As the second quarter concluded, the Indian team maintained a commanding 4-0 lead.
Despite already having a comfortable lead, the Indian team showed no signs of slowing down in the third quarter. They continued to dominate the proceedings, with Deepika Soreng (34') successfully converting a penalty corner. Annu (39') completed her hat-trick, while Mumtaz Khan (41') scored her second goal of the match. Neelam (45') also smashed home her shot from a penalty corner, bringing the score to 8-0 for India by the end of the penultimate quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Indian team continued their relentless pursuit for more goals. Their determination paid off as they scored four additional goals, with Deepika Soreng (50', 54') and Mumtaz Khan (54', 60') completing their hat-tricks. As a result, India triumphed over their opponents with a final score of 12-0. In their next match, India will face Germany in the tournament.
